Ecommerce growth in 2025 and beyond
Mar 4, 2025
Smarter, easier and quicker
The AI revolution has redefined the rules for eCommerce in 2025. Of course, it’s easier than ever to generate content with AI, but content is only the beginning. SaaS companies in every sector are either integrating AI into existing products or building entirely new ones with AI at their core.
Customer service, logistics, and marketing are just a few areas where AI services have significantly reduced the capital required to run a medium-to-large scale eCommerce business. So far in 2025, global sales are on track to surpass $6.5 trillion, compared to $6.09 trillion in 2024. AI is at the forefront of this growth - but where do we go from here?
Leaner, faster and greener
Environmental impact is now a conscious part of the decision-making process for many consumers when considering a potential purchase. Companies are doing what they can to promote their improved environmental practices.
Logistics companies are major players in this shift. By moving towards more local fulfilment centres, they’re able to slash delivery times and reduce environmental impact. Consumers now expect quicker delivery services and can rest easier at night knowing their shipping carrier isn’t polluting as much as they once were.
Social, trustworthy and evolving
In 2025, social media shops have been rapidly integrated into the eCommerce ecosystem. The major platforms are TikTok Shop, Instagram Checkout, and YouTube Live Shopping.
Micro-influencers are dominating niche markets by directing consumers into checkout flows directly from their favourite social media platforms. A common theme among influencers is promoting transparency - where products come from, who made them, what environmental impact they have, and what potential health benefits they offer.
2025 also saw large-scale adoption of B2B eCommerce channels. Shopify played a key role in this shift with the release of its B2B functionality for Shopify Plus merchants in 2024.
Wholesale distributors have been putting in the work over the past six months, and that effort is paying off across the eCommerce landscape. Distributors are being offered easier and more efficient ordering systems, real-time stock tracking, mobile-responsive B2B portals, and buyer-specific pricing terms.
We can expect this win-win opportunity to fuel B2B eCommerce growth even further in 2026.
